How To Play RAR Files

The first thing you need to understand is that .rar files are not multimedia files, so you usually can't play them right away. A RAR file is an archive, just like .zip or .tar, that can contain one or more compressed files. You can "extract" those files from the .rar archive and play them in your favorite music/video player.

Extracting And Playing RAR Files

The most popular software for extracting RAR files is WinRAR, a shareware application (see the bottom of this article for free alternatives). If you have WinRar installed, you can play .rar files by performing these steps :

Right-click the file in question. Choose "Extract Here". This will put all the contents of the archive file in the same folder as the .rar file. Locate the multimedia files created (.avi, .mpg, .mp3 or similar) and double-click to play.
Special Case : Partial Downloads

Sometimes a video file is split among many smaller RAR files. If you have all the parts you can play it as described above, but what if some files are missing or "broken"? You can still play at least part of the video. To preview the video, follow these steps :
Locate the first of the .rar files. Depending on the version of WinRAR used to create them, the first file will either have "part1" in it's name, or it will be the only file with the ".rar" extension (other files will have extensions like ".r01", ".r02" and so on). Right-click the file and choose "Extract Files...". A dialog box will appear. Tick the checkbox that says "Keep broken files" (it's in the lower left corner). Click OK and wait while the files are decompressed. Eventually an error message will come up, click Cancel. Now you have a video file that you can play in any video player that can handle broken files. Windows Media Player isn't always able to do this - I personally recommend the free VLC media player for this task. You can download it from http://www.videolan.org

Here's an extra tip - sometimes the VLC player can play RAR files right away, without extracting them first. This depends on the video codec and the compression algorithm used, so it may not work in certain cases.

Baseball players would be in a pretty pickle if all signals were verbal. Would a player be excused, by an irate fit to be tied coach, if he did not hear the screaming that goes on.

The coaches are out there giving signals. The umpire is giving signals. Baseball players are watching everything. What is this signal thing about anyway?

There is a secret among a coach and his players and they dare not let the opponent in on the know. I have seen the first and third base coaches play around out there like they had the itch or mosquitoes biting or something.

They will scratch their shirts across the letters, take off their caps, run their hands through their hair, rub the back of their legs with their foot, and even rub their arms like crazy. I know something must be up. Wonder if it's catching?

I'll tell you who had better catch it. Those team players. I'm told these are their secret signals.

The umpires also go through all kind of gyrations. I have seen the base umps run down the foul line on a well hit ball suddenly stop, turn toward the playing field and point like a bird dog on point.

Another common antic of an umpire is he will intently watch when a runner is running to a base and a tag is about to be made. If the tag is too late to get the runner out then the umpire goes half ape. He will stand there throwing his hand out as if he is shooing away a swarm of gnats. Then he calmly turns his back and walks away.

Players may jump up and down and exclaim he was out and the manager may even come a running. Brother, the umpire simply stands there with his arms folded across his chest and utters not a word. The coach sends his players away with a hand motion. The coach has his say to the ump. The coach makes out like he is mad but suddenly, like an ole hound dog which has been shot with a B B gun, he tucks and trots away.

Folks all of this signaling and use of hands serves a most useful and human purpose.

Many, many years ago a couple of deaf players loved and played the game of baseball. These two gentlemen, a Mr. Luther Taylor and Mr.William Hoy, are owed a tremendous debt of gratitude for their dedicated insistence for use and development of umpire hand signals.

Their courage to play the game of baseball before crowds watching their every move and action put them both on display and many a less stout hearted persons would have never stood and played little less excel.

Luther and William are vivid reminders of what not only made them as individuals great among many but it tells a story about our game of baseball as well.

William and Luther advancing the hand signal requirement for acceptance as the norm and such as Pete Gray and Jim Abbot foregoing tremendous physical handicaps and Jackie Robinson taking up the mantle bringing desegregation to the forefront. Folks when you witness such as this all in the name of our great game of baseball you have to marvel at the far reach of this sport we call BASEBALL.

I refer to these gentlemen as Mr. in respect for what they did for our great game of baseball. You see they are credited with making umpire hand signals an integral part of the game.

Dummy Hoy, William Ellsworth Hoy played professional baseball from 1888-1932 with a lifetime batting average of .288.

Robert Lewis Stevenson was handicapped from youth by poor health, he struggled all his life against tuberculosis. Despite this, he graduated from law school and then devoted his entire life to writing. He said that there was never a day that he felt well enough to work, but he said that if he had not overcome that feeling, nothing would have been accomplished.

Fortunately, not all of us suffer from such poor health all of our life. Those who do, usually learn to live with their disabilities. The rest of us may have a time in our life where our health fails us and we feel helpless and depressed. Depression leads to inactivity and as Stevenson said, nothing is accomplished.

The other day, my wife and I went to our granddaughter's wedding. There, I saw a young man struggling on those arm crutches we see vets using too often. He said, "Don' t you remember me? I helped you move from Arizona."

I did remember him as a healthy young missionary. In fact, I had delivered some of his personal effects to his family when we got to Idaho. He and his companion had helped move our furniture into the moving trucks.

I learned from his family members that he had been in an automobile accident. He was told that he would never walk again. But this young man was tough, had heart and he had faith. Mix that together and you have a young man who can walk-although it takes every fiber of his being to do it. As the moves, the perspiration pours down his face. His face grimaces from the physical torture. He walks!

I was told that he has made great progress, that he is doing much better now than a year ago. At the wedding reception, later in the day, he told me that he had just graduated from college and was applying to medical school.

When I was in college, and again five years later when I was in graduate school, a fellow student who had never graduated because of his cerebral palsy was still there trying to finish his degree. He was in terrible straits but he refused to give up. As his situation deteriorated, he struggled harder. It was a pitiful sight of extreme courage.

My sister suffered from polio. She was crippled from age three and passed away at age nineteen. She became an "adult" when she was very young because of her health problems. When I was a boy, I use to help her with her iron and leather braces which were always falling apart. Finally, her thirteenth surgery allowed her to walk with a special shoe. She was a good writer so we know her thoughts. Her body was weak but her brain and will was strong.

So many suffer under so many different conditions. We all should be concerned and try to do our part to buoy up those that should have our encouragement. They may not want our sympathy but they will welcome our love and support.

Each of us is handicapped in some way. I love music but have no talent for music-but I have instilled the love for music in my children who are musically talented and they have done the same for their children. Two of us tone deaf men at church are looking for two more tone deaf men so that we can start a quartet. I can't overcome this deficiency. I look for other ways to make something valuable for this human race.

Maybe that is the answer. If we can't do what we would like to do, maybe we can find something that we can do despite our handicaps. We need to be persistent at what we want to do and have faith in ourselves to be able to do it. We may still fail and have to try something else. But we will die trying.

I'm handicapped too because I'm over weight. Let's see. I would like to be much thinner.

Creative types may be curious to learn how to make lanyards. If you are able to follow simple directions you will be able to produce your very own lanyard for personal use or to give as a gift. Whether for yourself or a as a gift, lanyards are a great way to secure your keys, cell phone, badge, or whistle.

In learning how to make lanyards it is important to choose the right material. A popular lanyard making material is a thin, elastic, and flexible plastic lace. It is readily available at most craft stores and referred to as craftlace, lanyard, gimp, or boondoggle.

There are many different stitches that can be used to make or braid a lanyard. Many braiding techniques are complex and time consuming. One of the simpler braids is referred to as a crown (or round) knot. One must utilize patience and follow directions carefully in learning how to make lanyards. The basic crown knot is as follows:

To begin, take two strands of craftlace, fold them together (length will depend on the type of lanyard) and tie a knot at toward the top to hold them securely together. You now have four strings secured at the top.

Spread the four strings apart, separately, pointing in each cardinal direction of a compass. Hold the "west" string with one finger (close to the knot). At the same time, pull the "west" string over the "north" string.

Continuing on, cross the "north" string" over the "east" string. At this point the "north" string is covering both the "west" string and the "east" string. Now cross the "east" string over the "south" string. Finally, cross the "south" string over the "west" string.
At this point pull each end of the four string extremely tight to make the first knot. Continue crossing the strings in the same manner until the desired length is reached. The knots will produce a rounded lanyard.
